About Skin Checks & Cancer Screenings
-
Arizona has some of the highest rates of sun exposure in the country, which increases the risk of skin cancer. Early detection can make a significant difference in treatment and outcomes. During your annual exam, I assess your skin from head to toe, identify precancers such as actinic keratoses, and evaluate any moles or lesions that may need closer follow up or biopsy.
-
Your skin check includes a detailed exam of all areas, including places that are easy to overlook on your own. I evaluate moles, sunspots, and any new or changing areas. If I see something concerning, I explain what I am noticing and outline next steps, which may include monitoring or performing a small biopsy. My goal is to help you understand what I am seeing and why.
-
Between visits, it is helpful to watch for warning signs that may signal a precancer or melanoma. Contact me if you notice:
A mole that changes in size, shape, or color
A new spot that looks different from your other moles
A lesion that bleeds, crusts, or does not heal
A persistent rough or scaly patch
A dark streak under a fingernail or toenail
-
If a lesion appears atypical or suspicious, I discuss what makes it stand out and what I recommend next. This may include a biopsy, treatment of a precancer, or a plan for short-term follow up. You will always know what to expect and why each step is recommended.

Everyone benefits from routine skin checks, but some people are at higher risk for skin cancer. I especially recommend yearly exams for individuals with:
A history of skin cancer
A family history of melanoma
Significant sun exposure or tanning bed use
Many moles or atypical moles
Fair skin that burns easily
A weakened immune system
Skin checks should feel thorough, not rushed. I take a careful, methodical approach—looking at patterns, changes, and anything that stands out—so nothing important is missed. The goal is to give you clear answers and, when needed, act early with confidence.
