Why Is Gen Alpha So Obsessed With Skincare?
Gen Alpha doesn't just use skincare.
They collect it. Display it. And they trade it with friends.
And increasingly, they are using products designed for skin concerns they don't actually have.
So how did we get here?
They Are Looking At Their Faces Constantly
Previous generations looked in the mirror.
Gen Alpha sees themselves in selfies, videos, FaceTime, TikToks and group photos all day long.
At the same time, they are consuming content created by influencers who may be using filters, strategic lighting and editing.
The result is a very distorted idea of what normal skin is supposed to look like.
Pores become a problem.
Texture causes stress.
A tiny bump becomes something that needs a serum, toner and an overnight mask.
Skincare Has Become A Status Symbol
There is another piece of this that I don't think we talk about enough.
For many kids, skincare isn't really about skincare.
It's about fitting in.
Bright packaging, viral products and influencer routines have turned certain beauty products into social currency. The fact that some of these products are expensive only adds to the appeal.
I've had young patients openly tell me they want certain products because they look good on their vanity.
They don't know what the product does.
They don't know why they're using it.
They just know everyone else has it.
The Problem Isn't That Kids Are Washing Their Faces
As a dermatologist, I actually love that young people are interested in taking care of their skin.
I would much rather teach a 10-year-old about sunscreen and healthy skin habits than have them realize at 40 that years of tanning wasn’t a great idea.
The problem is the belief that more products equal better skin.
Young skin doesn't need an elaborate routine designed to address collagen loss, hyperpigmentation and decades of cumulative damage. They don’t have those things.
It needs to be protected.
It needs a healthy skin barrier.
And kids need to understand that real skin has pores, texture and occasional breakouts.
Maybe the most important skincare lesson we can teach Gen Alpha isn't which serum to buy but that skin is not supposed to look filtered.
